Fifty deathdog bitches keened for the privilege of eating that steaming organ. Heartless and breathless, Goff heard them howl, for the drug in his system rendered him immune to shock, if not to pain; immune also to fear. His eyes refused to beg for immortality. He saw the helmet overhead, and knew the difference it could make—

“Bear the message of our compassion!” Big Sister chanted, and stretched her red hands upward to pull the dreamskull down. Captain GofFs soul began radioing off to Mercury, to be bunkered among the billions in the City of the Dead.
